The Financial Times had an interesting travel article in its September 24, 2010 issue. Ian Hargreaves, wife, and two daughters completed a six week road trip across Europe. They drove from Stockholm to Moscow to Bosnia to Rome and to Barcelona and that list omits most of their itinerary. They stayed in hotels and with friends. They also mentioned two home exchanges, in Munich and Sardinia.
The road trip is an American cultural tradition, encouraged by cheap gas and inadequate public transportation. Working a home exchange or two or three into this adventure is an inspired idea. Relaxing for a few days or a week at a home is a welcome break from the road. You can have a home cooked meal instead of fast food. Everybody can have their own room, or more important, as parents you can have a room not shared with two children.
