Home Exchange for Older Folks

by John Mensinger on March 15, 2011

HomeExchange50plus is a relatively new website that requires their members to be 50 years of age or older.   There are reasons to focus on this part of the market.  Older folks share certain features in common as regards house swapping:

1.       They don’t have to worry about school holidays.

2.       If they are retired they are free to travel anytime.

3.       They tend to travel as couples.

4.       Many are not eager to have families with children in their homes.

Couples are much more likely to consider hospitality exchange.  This is when you host people in your home for a few days or longer.  At a later date you are the house guests of the family you hosted.   There are older couples that will spend 3 months or more touring a continent via hospitality exchange.  If there is a week here or there where they don’t find a host they can always take a hotel room.  An Australian, John Axelson wrote a book Exchanging Homes Holidays, that explains his positive experiences in Europe with traditional and hospitality exchanges.

My quick review of this agency is positive.  The listing format is clear, the FAQ’s are well written, the search tools work efficiently.  At the moment they are free to join, I estimate total membership at less than 300, most in the English speaking world.   They allow their members to designate their properties as suitable for a city break or a golfing holidays.   You can search for these places.   You can offer your place for exchange or rental.

Sadly I easily meet the membership criteria of HomeExchange50plus.   I have signed up for their temporary offer of free membership and suggest that those of you north of 50 do the same.

Hi, I am very interested in having an exchange approx Christmas 2013 into February or March 2014. I prefer the Kent area of England as my relatives are there.

Looking forward to searching.

I, too was a life time member of Seniors Home Exchange, which indeed seems to have vanished. I would like to take advantage of your free six month offer to list our home here on Cape Cod, MA (USA). I believe our listing number 4483.

I am another of those who had a lifetime membership with Seniors Home Exchange only to find they have vanished. If your 6 month free offer is available I would also like to take advantage of it. Our home is in Portland Oregon and the listing was #7121.
